Firefighter Alan Lilly's final shift with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) fell on his 60th birthday, and his son was working it with him. Justin is also an MDFR firefighter, and the two served the shift together at Station 76 in Bay Harbor Islands, the department said in a Sept. 10 post.

Lilly came to the fire service after 26 years in the U.S. Air Force. He joined MDFR with Recruit Class 105 and served 21 years, which puts his public service at 47 years across the two careers. The department wrote that his final shift "brought two generations of firefighters together and marked the close of nearly five decades dedicated to public service."

The department closed its post by thanking Lilly "for his years of service to Miami-Dade County" and wishing him "a happy and healthy retirement."

Putting a father and son on the same shift for the last day is a send-off worth arranging whenever a department can.
