About Turnout Life
Turnout is the crew's first move on a call. The tones drop, firefighters step into boots and bunker pants, and the clock that departments call turnout time starts running. The gear gets its name from that moment, and so does this site.
Turnout Life covers the work around that moment: the skills a company drills on a weeknight, the rigs and tools crews depend on, the lessons from fires that went wrong, and firehouse traditions.
Most of what firefighters need to know is already written down somewhere. It sits in long NIOSH line-of-duty death investigations, UL fire research, NFPA standards, manufacturer manuals and city council minutes. Some of it lives only in stories told at shift change. Very little of it is written to be read on a day off or passed around the kitchen table.
That's the job we took on. We read the long reports, check the numbers against the source, and write them up in plain language a crew can use. When we get something wrong, we fix it. Corrections and tips go to [email protected].
