NFPA 1850 PPC manager card

Run turnout and breathing-apparatus care under one standard, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1850, with one person in charge.

Documents and people

  • Cite NFPA 1850 (2026), Tentative Interim Amendments (TIAs) 26-1 to 26-4, and both errata.
  • Replace "1851" and "1852" in every SOP, spec and contract.
  • Name the personal protective clothing (PPC) manager in writing, with a backup.
  • Define PPC technician scope in writing.
  • Document member training on NFPA 1850.

Cleaning and handling

  • Use one cleaning glossary for gear and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Update washer programs; check each manufacturer's care label first.
  • Wear handling personal protective equipment (PPE) at the gear room and SCBA bench.
  • Get written verification status and results from each independent service provider (ISP).

SCBA shop

  • Keep a roster of manufacturer-authorized SCBA technicians.
  • Keep inspection, flow test, repair and cylinder records for each SCBA.
  • Write service life by certification edition and upgrades, not years alone.

Wastewater and lithium-ion fires

  • Plan quarterly wastewater evaluation and documentation (TIA 26-1).
  • Write a lithium-ion battery decision step into the cleaning SOP.
  • Line up a specialized-cleaning option before you need it.

Based on NFPA 1850 (2026) and TIA 26-1. Confirm against your current copy.
